Barbell classification

Apr 07, 2025

Barbells are divided into two types: standard barbells and non-standard barbells.
Standard barbell: It consists of three parts: barbell bar (horizontal bar), barbell plates and clamps. International weightlifting competitions must use international standard barbells approved by the International Weightlifting Federation. There are two types of barbells: men's barbells and women's barbells. The difference is mainly in the barbell bar. The barbell plates are of the same standard. The men's barbell bar is 2.20 meters long and weighs 20 kilograms, while the women's barbell bar is 2.15 meters long and weighs 15 kilograms. The barbell bar has a diameter of 0.028 meters, and the largest barbell plate has a diameter of 0.45 meters. The rubber coating on the outside can increase the appearance and reduce the noise of the barbell falling to the ground. The weight, color and model of the barbell plates are as follows: 25 kg (red large), 20 kg (blue large), 15 kg (yellow large), 10 kg (green large), 5 kg (white medium), 2.5 kg (red medium small), 2 kg (blue small), 1.5 kg (yellow small), 1 kg (green small) and 0.5 kg (white small). All barbell plate weights must be marked with numbers on the outside. Each clamp weighs 2.5 kg. The rule for adding barbell plates is that the inside (added first) is heavy and the outside (added later), that is, the heavy ones are added on the inside and the light ones are added on the outside. Because the weight of the clamp is 2.5 kg, small barbell plates under 2 kg (including 2 kg) must be added on the outside of the clamp, and only one of these small barbell plates can be added on each side.
