The Importance of the Foot: Support Functions During Exercise

• From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective: Traditional Chinese Medicine regards the foot as the body's 'second brain'. The foot contains numerous acupoints and thousands upon thousands of nerve endings, with specific acupoints having close connections to internal organs. By observing the colour of the soles, toenails and the pads of the toes, one can assess the body's state of health. For example, the normal colour of the sole of the foot is slightly reddish; if the redness is very pronounced, it may indicate heat; a bluish tinge may indicate cold; a pale colour may indicate not only a cold syndrome but also malnutrition or anaemia; a purplish or blackish colour may indicate poor blood circulation.

• Disease associations: Certain abnormalities in the feet may be manifestations of other medical conditions. For instance, a loss of sensation in both feet may be caused by peripheral neuropathy, the two main causes of which are diabetes and alcohol abuse, whilst chemotherapy is also a contributing factor.

• Promoting Overall Health: The feet are a key area for health maintenance, with various methods available. For example, walking barefoot exercises the parts of the soles not in contact with the ground-which serve as vital support points for the body's balance-and allows the five toes to move freely with adequate spacing; regularly moving the toes can aid digestion, as the stomach meridian runs between the second and third toes, and the source point of the stomach meridian is also located at the toe joints; Gently tapping the soles of the feet with a stick stimulates the nerve endings there, promoting blood circulation and thereby enhancing health and preventing illness; whilst lying on your back, swinging your feet and rotating them as if pedalling a bicycle can promote blood circulation throughout the body and relieve fatigue; keeping your feet warm in winter can help prevent illness, as the soles of the feet are far from the heart and receive a limited blood supply, whilst their surface has close neural connections with the upper respiratory tract, particularly the nasal mucosa.
