The Importance of the Foot: Support Functions During Exercise

• Weight-bearing: The feet act as the body's 'stabilisers' when standing. When a person is standing, the primary points of contact are the heel, the first metatarsal and the fifth metatarsal, forming a stable triangular structure that distributes the body's weight and pressure across the various bones and joints, ensuring the body can stand firmly and engage in physical activity. At the same time, the toes, as an important part of the foot, also bear the body's weight and help maintain balance.

• Propulsion and Grip: By flexing and extending, the toes propel the body forward. Furthermore, the muscles and ligaments in the toes help them flex to grip the ground, preventing slips and ensuring safety during activities such as walking and running.

• Shock Absorption: The arch of the foot is a structure unique to humans; viewed from the side, the bones of the foot form an arched bridge, with muscles extending up to the leg. This gives the foot elasticity, enabling it to cushion the impact from the ground during running, jumping and performing difficult manoeuvres, thereby protecting the nerves in the sole of the foot as well as the brain, spine and joints.

• Transmission of Movement and Lever Balance: In daily activities and exercise, the foot also serves to transmit movement and provide lever balance, assisting the body in performing various actions. Blood Circulation: Blood flows from the heart to the soles of the feet and then returns to the heart. Poor circulation in the feet can lead to varicose veins, arterial embolisms and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. Therefore, blood circulation in the feet is crucial to the body's overall circulatory system. Sensory Function The toes are rich in nerve endings, enabling the perception of ground conditions and helping people maintain balance and safety whilst walking or running. At the same time, the entire foot is connected to other parts of the body via a network of nerves, transmitting information received from the ground to the legs, buttocks, lower back, coccyx, chest and neck.
