Start with the Most Common Mistake: Catching the Right Wave Shape

Most of the time, beginner surfers fail to catch a full wave. This is because they tend to catch waves that are too shallow or too steep.

If you want to catch more waves, you need to position yourself more precisely on the right slope.

Think of a wave like a skateboard ramp: the steeper the slope, the greater the acceleration; the steeper and larger the wave, the greater the momentum and speed.

The waves work similarly to a ramp.

Bigger and steeper waves provide more momentum.

While this can make catching waves more difficult, it's crucial to understand this visualization process.

If you want to be carried away by the waves, you need to catch the right wave shape at the right time. Avoid waves that are too soft, powerless, or too vertical.

Common mistakes: Not looking back at the wave. This is closely related to our first mistake: not choosing the right wave. In fact, it's crucial to look back at the waves. You need to observe their shape, strength, and other factors to determine the right time to paddle.

The only way to learn how to position yourself on the right slope is to look back at the waves.
