To give a simple example: some boards are wide, some are narrow, some are narrow at the front and wide at the back, and some are wide at the front and narrow at the back… These are the differences in longboard profiles, and their effects on actual surfing are as follows:

The wider the board, the greater its contact area with the water, which makes you feel more stable on the board and provides greater ease and a sense of security when catching waves or performing maneuvers like the "five-ten"; However, the wider the board, the greater the force it exerts on the water (displacement), making it more difficult to maneuver it out of or into the wave face. It is less agile and slower to respond during turns or acceleration, and with its increased volume and weight, it feels more cumbersome to control. Conversely, a narrower board produces the opposite effects in terms of performance.

There are many factors that determine a surfboard's performance, but the outline is the most obvious and fundamental-it sets the tone for the board's basic functionality and style. To enhance desirable characteristics and minimize undesirable ones for different surfing styles, designers rarely opt for a single outline when creating surfboards, leading to variations such as narrow-front, wide-back or wide-front, narrow-back designs.

In longboard training, I generally divide the use of the board's edges into two sections: the front section is responsible for speed, stability, and grip on the wave face during gliding, while the rear section is dedicated to the board's maneuverability, responsiveness, and control during turns and cutbacks.
