The first volleyball rules were published by American Mr. Morgan (William G. Morgan) through Spaulding Sports Publishing House. At that time, it stipulated the use of "rotation system" and "15 points per game". In 1918, it stipulated that the number of people on the field should be 6. Since then, 6-person volleyball has become popular in Europe and the United States.
Springfield College is the birthplace of volleyball. The YMCA of the college was the first organization to spread volleyball and also the first to hold the first volleyball exhibition match. The officers of the YMCA, missionaries, students who graduated from Springfield College, and the US military who participated in the First World War all became the early spreaders of volleyball. Volleyball was first introduced to Canada in 1900. It was introduced to India in Asia in the same year. From 1914 to 1918, during the First World War, volleyball was brought to Europe by the US military. As for when, where and by whom volleyball was introduced to China, it is no longer possible to verify. However, existing historical data proves that volleyball activities were carried out in Guangzhou, Hong Kong and other places in southern China as early as 1905. In the early days of volleyball introduced to China, in addition to some churches and schools developing and spreading it, the YMCA also played a considerable role in promoting and spreading this project.
Volleyball was introduced to Asia in 1900. In the early days of its development, the number of players on the field was not 6 but 16. According to Mr. F.S. Brown, an American who introduced volleyball in the Philippines, "At that time, there were gymnasiums in the United States, which were more suitable for 6-person volleyball. There are many Asians, and most of them are played outdoors, so we have to consider that most people can participate in volleyball." Therefore, Mr. F.S. Brown and Mr. F.H. Brown introduced 16-person volleyball to the Philippines and Japan. Therefore, the 16-person system was adopted in the first Far East Games in 1913. It evolved into a 12-man system at the 4th Far Eastern Games in 1919, and into a 9-man system at the 8th Far Eastern Games in 1927. In July 1950, the rules and methods of 6-man volleyball were first introduced at the National Sports Workers Summer Study Conference held by the All-China Sports Federation. In 1951, the 6-man system was officially adopted. Since then, 6-man volleyball has been gradually developed throughout the country.
