The rules stipulate that any part of a player's body may contact the ball. However, the ball must be struck, not caught or thrown. The ball may bounce in any direction. Should a player violate the aforementioned rules, they shall be penalised for a holding offence.
The rules stipulate that the ball must simultaneously contact different parts of a player's body. Should the ball sequentially contact different parts of a player's body, this constitutes a consecutive offence. However, during a block action, the same player or different players within the same block may consecutively touch the ball in a single movement. During a team's first contact, different parts of a player's body may consecutively touch the ball in a single hitting action. The first contact includes receiving the serve, receiving an attack, receiving a block from one's own team, and receiving an opponent's block. During a team's second and third touches, the ball must not consecutively contact different parts of a player's body.

(4) Striking the ball before the ball is tossed or before the server has cleared the court.
