Weightlifting Belts: Placebo or Essential Back Support?
Squats and deadlifts are gold-standard exercises for building muscle strength, but they also place immense stress on the internal structures of the lower back, making them prone to acute and overuse injuries.
At the gym, we often see fitness enthusiasts using weightlifting belts when performing heavy squats or deadlifts. But is this common piece of equipment truly an indispensable protective tool, or does it merely offer a psychological comfort?
A recent study tested experienced weightlifters, focusing on comparing lumbar spine mechanics and major muscle activation during deadlifts and back squats under three conditions: no belt (NWB), flexible belt (WBF), and rigid belt (WBS).
So how does wearing a belt alter our body mechanics? The study provides us with representative scientific findings:
1. Significantly improves lumbar curvature: making the back "straighter" and safer.
The most consistent finding in this study was that, for both deadlifts and squats, using a belt significantly reduced the angle of lumbar lordosis-in other words, it reduced the degree to which we "sag" or "arch" our lower back.
This means that belts can help users maintain a spinal curvature closer to the neutral position.Comparison of results: Rigid belts performed far better than flexible belts.
In deadlifts: Flexible belts reduced the angle by 2.7°, while rigid belts reduced it by 5.2°.In squats: Flexible belts reduced the angle by 3.4°, while rigid belts significantly reduced it by 7.0°.
The study also revealed that stiffer belts are more effective at limiting excessive extension of the lower back, helping the spine maintain a more stable neutral position during exertion. This is crucial for reducing excessive strain on the intervertebral discs and ligaments.
