Activating deep stabilizing muscles: The multifidus muscles are deep stabilizing muscles that run closely along the spine and serve as the "core key" to maintaining lumbar stability. The activity of the lumbar multifidus muscles was significantly increased after using both types of belts.

 

Reducing the Burden on Superficial Working Muscles: During squats, when using a rigid belt, the activity of the more superficial erector spinae (longus) and lumbar iliopsoas muscles was significantly reduced.

 

This reveals a phenomenon of "responsibility transfer": weightlifting belts prompt the body to delegate the primary responsibility for maintaining stability to the deep, stability-specialized multifidus muscles. At the same time, this allows the superficial muscles-such as the erector spinae-which are better suited for generating high force, to contribute more efficiently to the effort.

 

III. Differentiated Effects of Different Belt Types

 

It is clear that weightlifting belts are not a "one-size-fits-all" piece of equipment; their material, stiffness, and structural design directly influence their biomechanical effects.

 

1. Rigid Belts: Typically made of multiple layers of leather or high-strength materials, they are highly rigid and exhibit minimal deformation.

 

Research shows that they are most effective at reducing lumbar lordosis, particularly during squats.

 

This indicates that rigid belts provide stronger physical support and are better suited for heavy-load, low-rep training scenarios, especially compound movements like squats and deadlifts that place extreme stress on the lumbar spine.

 

2. Flexible belts: Typically made of materials such as nylon or polyester, they possess a certain degree of elasticity.While they can also improve lumbar posture, their effectiveness is less pronounced than that of rigid belts.
