Research has shown that among young men with resistance training experience, the use of grip straps enhances grip confidence during deadlifts, demonstrating a moderate effect size at 90% of 1RM and a large effect size during 1RM testing; this effect was observed under both test conditions-with and without grip straps. In grip strength training, participants with resistance training experience reported a higher overall sense of grip security when using a grip strap to perform a 1RM attempt, demonstrating a large effect size. In a single-rep deadlift at 80% 1RM without a grip strap, the use of a grip strap reduced the perceived exertion, showing a large effect size; In contrast, another deadlift study found that among young men with resistance training experience, during a 1RM deadlift at 90% with a support strap, the overall perceived exertion was significantly higher (moderate effect size), and heart rate also showed an upward trend. Specifically, perceived exertion in the lumbar region increased significantly (very large effect size), while perceived exertion in the forearms was higher when the support strap was not used (very large effect size).

Therefore, when performing deadlifts and power grips, the use of a grip strap helps enhance perceived safety and confidence in the grip, while also reducing the perceived exertion during training-a effect that is particularly pronounced during submaximal load sets. However, it should be noted that grip straps can increase the absolute load lifted, which may in turn increase perceived exertion; grip straps effectively reduce perceived exertion only when the same load is used. Further research is needed to investigate their perceptual effects in other types of training.
