However, it is important to note that this form of exercise and its intensity require a high level of physical fitness. While weighted vests offer numerous health benefits, potential risks must also be considered. Research has shown that carrying heavy loads may increase the risk of musculoskeletal injuries, particularly in the legs and back. Research has found that carrying loads exceeding 25 kilograms poses greater risks. Additionally, excessive loads can cause the back and torso to stiffen, increasing the risk of muscle and tendon strains. Therefore, when exercising, it is important to use weighted vests within safe limits to increase intensity and endurance. It is recommended to start with lighter-weight vests and gradually increase the weight as the body adapts, ultimately maximizing the benefits of weighted vests while minimizing the risk of injury.

Research Background: The U.S. Army Load Carrying Decision Aid (LCDA) metabolic model is used by militaries worldwide to predict the physiological responses of personnel engaged in long-range foot operations, particularly metabolic rate. However, the LCDA has not been adapted for load-bearing vests, which are common among combat personnel and differ from backpacks and other forms of load-bearing equipment in terms of energy expenditure.

Research Objective: The objective of this study is to develop and validate a metabolic model component that can accurately estimate the impact of vest loads on standing and walking metabolic rates for military mission planning and general applications.
