Standard mouthguards: These are pre-formed and ready to use. However, they often do not fit well, can be bulky, and may interfere with breathing and speaking. As a result, they are rarely used today.
Can mouthguards be used long-term? The answer is definitely no. Like our teeth, mouthguards naturally experience wear and tear over time, especially with frequent or improper use. This degradation affects their protective performance. When a mouthguard no longer fits properly or shows excessive wear, it should be replaced.
For adolescents, regular replacement is even more important, as their oral cavity and teeth are still developing. It is recommended that they replace their mouthguards every 3 to 6 months. Adults who use mouthguards frequently and notice significant wear should replace them at least every 6 months.
Improper cleaning of mouthguards can also compromise oral hygiene. Therefore, they must be thoroughly cleaned both before and after use-ideally with toothpaste and a toothbrush, if necessary.
