As you move around the punching bag, remain calm and composed. Do not approach it as if it were an adversary.
A good punch should be sudden, fluid, and without pushing or hesitation.
Proper footwork
Proper footwork should be a basic requirement, but unfortunately, many beginners have poor footwork due to spending too much time focused on the punching bag.
To avoid developing bad footwork habits, consider the following points.
Standing
Keep both feet on the ground and stand still! Do not lean on the punching bag, rest your shoulders against it, or try to push it, as if you were in close combat.
Resting your shoulders on the punching bag (especially for beginners) can lead to loss of balance on the boxing ring later on.
Your opponent can easily move you off balance and counterattack.
Beginners must absolutely learn how to maintain balance to attack and defend when needed.
Moving
When moving, do not simply lower your hands and walk around the bag in a circle. Instead, keep your feet on the ground as you move around the bag.
Do not cross your feet. Try to imagine your footwork as a walking motion, not a jumping motion.
A common mistake among beginners is jumping around randomly. This habit can lead to poor distance awareness, wasted energy, and an unstable posture that limits your punching and body movement.
Good footwork means standing and moving, not leaning and jumping.
The biggest issue: Overemphasizing power
Proper punching bag training is simply about good punching and good body movement.
It's that simple, yet it's often overlooked.
The reason is that people naturally want to hit as hard as possible. Hitting hard looks good and feels good.
Every loud thud from the bag encourages you to punch even harder next time. The heavier your punch, the better it feels.
