Taekwondo uniforms-do you really understand them?

In taekwondo training, the taekwondo uniform serves as the practitioner's battle attire, embodying traditional aesthetics and practical functionality while also reflecting the spirit and culture of taekwondo.

Before the first regular training session begins, let's take a moment to familiarise ourselves with the uniform.

NO.1 Uniform Classification

ITF (International Taekwondo Federation) Taekwondo Uniform:

Mainly white in colour, symbolising the martial art originating from Korea; the belt wraps around the body once, signifying 'my way is consistent'; the belt is divided into two equal lengths at the front, symbolising the union of technique and spirit.

WTF (World Taekwondo Federation) Taekwondo Uniform:

White-collared Taekwondo uniforms are worn by beginners and those below black belt; red-and-black-collared Taekwondo uniforms are worn by red-and-black belts or coloured belts; black-collared Taekwondo uniforms are worn by black belt students.

NO.2 Belt Colour Classification

The colours of Taekwondo belts, from lowest to highest, are: white belt, white-yellow belt, yellow belt, yellow-green belt, green belt, green-blue belt, blue belt, blue-red belt, red belt, red-black belt, and black belt.

Also known as 'ten grades and nine dan,' these ranks symbolise the world and represent the natural order.

Starting from white, moving to the yellow of the earth's surface, yellow soil gives rise to green plants, which grow towards the blue sky, above which is the red sun, and beyond the red sun lies the black cosmos...

The black belt represents the opposite of white, indicating that the wearer has mastered white-level techniques and can perform effectively even in darkness, embodying the meaning of fearing neither darkness nor hardship.

An athlete wearing a black belt has undergone long-term, rigorous training, with highly developed techniques, movements, and mindset. An athlete wearing a red-black belt or red belt 1st dan has undergone systematic training for an extended period and has reached the 1st dan level, now advancing toward the black belt.
