Two Types of Leg Press Machines

Most large gyms have two different types of leg press machines: an incline leg press that you can press with free weights (barbells, dumbbells, etc.), and a horizontal leg press that you can press on a cable press.

1. Incline Leg Press

In an incline leg press, you sit on a low, reclining seat with your feet pressed against an elevated plate.

You can add weights to the plate to adjust the resistance and make it more difficult.

In an incline leg press, you push against gravity, thereby mimicking a functional, non-mechanical movement you use in the real world.

The incline leg press allows you to add a lot of weight, which makes it a great tool for advanced exercisers.

However, because your body is positioned underneath the weight, the incline leg press places a greater strain on the spine, which can increase the risk of injury if used incorrectly.

2. Horizontal Leg Press

In a horizontal cable leg press, your feet sit on a platform that is at the same height as your torso.

This type of leg press usually features cable-mounted weight stacks that you can use to easily select the weight you want without having to stand up, and since you're working against the resistance you choose on the machine's pulley system (rather than gravity), the horizontal version doesn't offer as much of a functional advantage as the incline.

However, this type of leg press machine is less challenging for beginners and will allow you to adjust to the weight more quickly.
