Why Are Table Tennis Rackets Red on One Side and Black on the Other? The Story Behind This Unusual Rule

Table tennis, often referred to as the national sport in some countries, holds a special place in the hearts of millions. The sport's fast pace, strategic depth, and accessibility make it a favorite for both professional athletes and casual players. In recent years, especially leading up to major international tournaments like the Olympic Games, national teams have continued to dominate the sport with remarkable consistency.

In many parts of the world, including parks, schools, and community centers, it's common to see people of all ages enjoying a few rounds of table tennis. As widespread as the sport is, not everyone is aware of the more technical or historical aspects of it-such as the curious rule requiring rackets to be red on one side and black on the other.

A Rule Born from Controversy

In the early days of professional table tennis, there were no strict regulations regarding the color of a racket's rubber. Players could freely choose the type and color of rubber for both sides, often opting for similar shades. However, this led to a significant issue: opponents had difficulty identifying what type of rubber was being used during play, which could drastically affect how the ball behaved after contact.

The two most common types of rubber are inverted (smooth) and pimpled (either short or long). Inverted rubber allows for high levels of spin and control, while pimpled rubber can produce unpredictable bounces and disrupt spin. A skilled player could switch between these two sides seamlessly, especially during serves, making it extremely difficult for their opponent to anticipate the ball's trajectory or spin.
