Volleyball is a dynamic team sport that originated in the United States in the late 19th century and was introduced to China in the early 20th century. Since the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games, volleyball has been recognized as an official competition in the Summer Olympics, reflecting its global appeal and popularity.

Each team is allowed two 30-second timeouts per set. In sets one through four, there are two additional technical timeouts of 60 seconds each, automatically occurring when the leading team reaches 8 and 16 points. The fifth and deciding set does not have technical timeouts, though teams can still call two regular timeouts.

The highest governing body of the sport is the International Volleyball Federation. In China, the sport is managed by the national volleyball association, which is affiliated with the country's Olympic committee.

Origins and Early Development

Volleyball was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan in Holyoke, Massachusetts. At the time, he sought a less physically intense alternative to basketball but one that offered more activity than tennis. His concept combined elements of both sports, creating an indoor game that could be played by people of all ages. He initially used a tennis net set at basketball height and experimented with different balls before settling on a modified version of the basketball bladder, which better suited the indoor court.

The first set of volleyball rules was published in the U.S. through a sports publishing house. The game featured a rotation system and a 15-point set structure. By 1918, six-player teams had become standard. From its American roots, volleyball quickly spread across the globe. The YMCA (Young Men's Christian Association), missionaries, and U.S. military personnel played key roles in introducing volleyball to Canada, India, and China. In China, by 1905, volleyball was already being played in cities like Guangzhou and Hong Kong, with schools and churches playing significant roles in its dissemination.

In its early days in Asia, volleyball was played with more players-up to 16 per team-due to cultural preferences and outdoor environments. The Far Eastern Championship Games initially used 16-player teams in 1913, later reducing to 12 and 9 in subsequent editions. It wasn't until 1951 that the six-player version was officially adopted in China, after being introduced during a national sports training seminar the previous year.
